This article analyzes the trends and future of mobile app development through a Qualitative Literature Review of reputable literature since 2020. The study focuses on shifts in architecture and technology, the development of multi-platform apps and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), user experience design, as well as security and privacy as prerequisites for digital trust. The findings show that mobile app development is no longer just understood as software creation for Android and iOS, but as a process of engineering a digital ecosystem that integrates artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, cloud/edge computing, 5G, AR/VR, DevOps/DevSecOps, and generative AI. At the same time, user demands for apps that are personal, fast, inclusive, secure, energy-efficient, and easily accessible push developers to balance technical efficiency, experience quality, and data governance compliance. This article concludes that the future of mobile apps will be shaped by how well organizations can adopt adaptive architectures, cross-platform frameworks, human-centered design approaches, and security-by-design and privacy-by-design principles from the very beginning of the development life cycle. This study contributes by presenting a conceptual synthesis and a future research agenda on developing smart, sustainable, and trustworthy mobile apps
